Baigorri

The magnificent building of Bodegas Baigorri in Samaniego, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains, was designed by the Basque architect Iñaki Aspiazu, with the intention of integrating it harmoniously into the countryside. To the passer-by, only a huge glass cube can be seen among an extensive carpet of vineyards

However, all the industrious action in the winery takes place below, in its seven-underground story’s descending to a depth of 32 meters. Since its opening in 2002, gravity has taken the central role; mechanized pump systems are not used at all during the wine-making process, with the clear objective of maintaining the raw material in the best condition.
The other significant and defining factor at Baigorri are the new French oak barrels which are used in the ageing of all its wines. A perfect balance is thus achieved between the delicacy of the French wood and the intensity of the Rioja Alavesa grapes, always grown according to sustainable principles and harvested by hand under a rigorous selection procedure.
Bodega Baigorri works hard to provide the highest quality and the utmost excellence in their wines. To achieve this goal, the Baigorri winery combines the wisdom of old Rioja's winemaking traditions with the use of state-of-the-art technology. Moreover, all vines are grown following strict organic farming methods.
The wines from the Bodegas Baigorri winery, from the Rioja Alavesa region in Spain, are consistently listed among the best-crafted, most expressive wines produced in La Rioja.
This winery crafts its red wines from Tempranillo and Grenache grapes, while their only white wine is crafted from Viura (aka Macabeo) grapes.
